![]() ![]() Nine has opted for quantity over quality, launching 9Life – Australia's first lifestyle channel offering back-to-back reality TV shows. In addition to new, classic, and original ABC shows, you can also access the ABC News Live stream, a 24/7 news stream bringing you national ABC News coverage. ![]() A shift to MPEG-4 could make way for more channels or allow the networks to improve the quality of existing ones by increasing the video bit rate. Watch your favorite ABC shows as they air on TV with the live stream option on ABC.com and the ABC app when you sign in with your current TV provider. You should be able to pick up a bargain in the post-Christmas sales, but shop with care because some retailers have still been selling dirt-cheap MPEG-2-only gear for the last few years. You won't lose these channels completely, because the networks are retaining their SD digital broadcasts on 2, 7 and 9, but if you want to watch these channels in HD you'll need to upgrade to a television or set-top box with MPEG-4-compatible tuners. Things will get worse next year, with Seven and the ABC introducing HD simulcasts that are also expected to use MPEG-4. It's worth scanning for new channels and checking whether there's a setting in the menus to enable MPEG-4. ![]() If you can't see Nine's new HD simulcast on Channel 90 or the racing on Channel 78, but you can see the other HD channels, then your digital tuners probably don't support MPEG-4. Anything with a Freeview logo on it is MPEG-4 compatible. Please check the settings on both the TV set as well as the receiver to ensure that the SAP setting is turned off. There's another complication – Australia's broadcasters are beginning to shift to the more bandwidth-efficient MPEG-4 video format, but some of Australia's early digital television equipment supported only MPEG-2. Most of the time shows like Sunday Night Football and the local baseball games are in Spanish, but occasionally when I turn the TV on without changing channels or any settings, the game is in English. Many early digital televisions and set-top boxes featured only standard-definition TV tuners – meaning they're not capable of receiving the five high-definition channels: ONE 1, ABC News 24, SBS HD 30, 7Mate 70 and 9HD 90. My TV running software version 1231 suddenly started switching the baseball and football games to the Spanish language. The number of channels has more than tripled since then, but unfortunately some early digital television gear can't move with the times. New Year's Day will mark 15 years since digital television kicked off in Australia.
